Ex-assistant basketball coach suing St John's over firing

New York City (AP)-- A former St. John's aide basketball train is filing a claim against the university as well as head coach Mike Anderson, claiming he was discharged due to a health and wellness issue.

Steve DeMeo states he was let go in June after informing Anderson concerning a severe heart disease that required work accommodations because of the pandemic as well as would likely call for extra procedures and also medical leave. DeMeo says before that, Anderson had only commended his task performance.

The legal action, filed Thursday by Wigdor LLP in UNITED STATE Area Court, affirms DeMeo's dismissal broke the Family members and Medical Leave Act, along with New York civils rights and also labor regulations.

"St. John's College as well as coach Mike Anderson categorically reject Steve DeMeo's claims of wrongdoing, yet can not otherwise comment on pending litigation," the college claimed in a statement.

DeMeo, birthed in New york city City near St. John's, invested two periods at the school as an aide under Anderson as well as was just recently hired as an assistant coach at East Carolina.

Anderson was the Big East Train of the Year last period and also got a six-year contract extension from St. John's in May after leading the Red Storm to a 16-11 document and an unexpected fourth-place finish in the meeting standings.
